Baptism imprints on the soul an indelible spiritual sign, the character, which consecrates the baptised person for Christian worship. Because of he character Baptism cannot be repeated. – Catechism of the Church (1280)
What is Baptism?
Baptism is the first sacrament and the beginning of an individuals life into the Catholic church. Baptism comes from the Greek word Bapto which translates to; to wash or to immerse (Knight, 2009). The ritual occurs infront of a community of faith through the immersion or pouring of water . During this the priest says " I baptise you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" . Sometimes baptisms can occur during Sunday mass.
The Bible commands all people to be baptised just like Jesus was and this is because it washes away any sin we may have and introduces us to the Catholic Church.
A person of any age can be baptised.
The community is very important in this ritual as they are welcoming and witnesses to this ritual of initiation for the individual to the Church.A godparent especially has the responsibility of guiding the individual through their Catholic journey. A godparent must have already been confirmed and had their first Holy Communion and lead a life of faith which will set an example for their godchild.
