Rationale for teaching in Catholic Primary school
This resource has been developed to be used within a Catholic primary school for a stage 2 class within the Diocese of Broken Bay. It is an interactive way of teaching students about the components of baptism. This is with a lesson sequence of 3 lessons. Firstly students will learn what baptism is and its purpose, then move onto the steps involved with the ritual of baptism and finally the symbols and their importance. The teaching of these components of baptism is crucial to the students understanding the significance of baptism and the beginning of a Catholics journey.
This resource does not stand alone. The lesson sequence attached shows the role of the teacher and how they must first introduce the topic with scripture. The teaching of scripture is important as it teaches the students the actions of Jesus and uses the same language and terminology that is used in mass. Introducing baptism with the story of Jesus' baptism represents to them that through this ritual we are following Jesus' actions and the words of God. Students should first hear the scripture from the BIble then watch the supporting youtube clip to given them a visual representation of the story. This youtube link is then added to the webquest so that students can rewatch the video in their own time to gain a further understanding if necessary.
The incorporation of drama in the second lesson provides the students with a first hand example of the ritual and the steps that are necessary to perform a baptism. It is a hands on engaging experience for the students and provides opportunities for them to visually see the role of the priest/deacon and the individuals parents/caregivers and god parent. Within this experience students may also be able to reflect on any baptisms they have seen. It will encourage them to question their own baptism and what it means for them to be baptised.
The last lesson demonstrates the importance of the main symbols, this lesson will include more individual work as they have had whole class situations previously to develop their understandings of baptism. Students use the webquest to learn the importance of each of the main symbols used in a baptism. It will grow their understandings on what Baptism does for the individual and the link with Jesus Christ.
The use of a webquest benefits a students understanding as it gives them an opportunity to use it outside of the classroom. It is accessible to them at home if they wish to further look into baptism. Whilst using the webquest they are developing their technology skills and are provided with a new learning tool. This is very important as we teach students which lives are highly impacted by technology. The webquest can be differentiated to cater for different students learning abilities teachers can adjust the activities for particular students to extend them if necessary.
Through using this resource the student will develop a broader knowledge of the importance of their baptism and their role within the Catholic church. As stage 2 children in the Diocese of Broken Bay they will be preparing for their next sacraments of confirmation and eucharist. This resource aims to prepare them for learning about these sacraments and the importance of receiving them.
Finally this webquest has been designed to provide the most effective way of teaching baptism in a stage 2 school in the Diocese of Broken Bay. Please leave any comments or tips of ways to better this online resource on the blog page after you use it within your classroom.
