The symbols used in Baptism
Water:
Water is the most important symbol used within any Baptism. It symbolises the giving of life to the individual being Baptised.
The water cleanses away any original sin that we may be born with.

Oil:
Used within the ceremony twice, oil is used within the ritual as a sign of healing and then after the baptism as a sign of joy and thanksgiving. Signifies the gift of the Holy Spirit.
White garment:
White is a symbol of purity and cleanliness. When baptised we are placed in a white garment to symbolise the individuals new life in Christ.
Baptismal candle:
Jesus is always referred to as "the light of the word". When baptised the baptismal candle is lit from the paschal candle of the church representing the light of Christ.
